Conference in Faro talks about "Europe and Human Rights"

Miguel Amado is the guest speaker

A conference on “Europe and Human Rights”, by ambassador Miguel Amado, will take place this Tuesday, December 10th, from 17 pm, in the Municipal Library Auditorium of Faro.

The initiative, by the information center Europe Direct Algarve, serves to commemorate the International Day of Human Rights.

Miguel Amado has worked in four of these EU representations/delegations since 1989 in Madagascar, first as an advisor and then as an ambassador, and at this conference he will speak about his international experience in this field.

"Contact with poverty and typical problems has heightened awareness of the need to contribute to a better world," he recognizes.

Miguel Amado also worked at the European Commission's headquarters, in Brussels, from 2004 to 2008, as Head of Unit for Thematic Affairs, Democracy and Human Rights.

In 2006/2007 he was a special envoy of President Barroso (and later the European Commission) to Timor-Leste on five missions, with the aim of dialoguing with local authorities, with a view to helping to restore peace, respect for the Constitution, strengthen cooperation with the EU and preparing the opening of an EU delegation in the country, returning definitively to Portugal in 2010.

After her intervention, journalist Susana Helena de Sousa will moderate a table of guests who will bring reflection on Human Rights at national and regional scale.

Joining this event, the European Parliament will present on 18 December the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought 2019 to Ilham Tohti, an economist who fights for the rights of the Uighur minority in China.

The Europe Direct Algarve center is a European information body hosted by the Algarve Regional Coordination and Development Commission.
