Câmara de Tavira reaffirms that the new bridge will be "in perfect harmony" with the landscape

The civic movement “Tavira Semper” contests the work

The Chamber of Tavira issued a clarification, this Thursday, December 19, in which it reaffirms that the new bridge over the river Gilão will be "in perfect harmony" with the landscape, refuting the accusations of the citizens' movement that contests the work.

O “Tavira Semper” movement brought to the public, recently, a manifesto about the construction of the new bridge, showing itself against the work for not obeying «any aesthetic concern of integration of the typical architecture of the downtown».

Citizens accuse the Câmara de Tavira of having ignored, “over the last few years, all the criticisms and questions, never explaining the choice of this project, nor disclosing the studies that support it. The population was completely removed from the public debate and the decision taken by the municipal executive».

In the statement issued today, the Chamber says that "the bridge under construction is not a "viaduct bridge", as is now intended to be believed".

Ana Paula Martins, president of the Tavirense autarchy, jI had told the Sul Informação that the question of the bridge providing a lane for automobile transit is not a problem.

“For me, to be making an investment of this size and not preparing the possibility of having a traffic lane, even for emergency vehicles, would not make sense”, he said, then.

"The solution designed for this location is characterized by simplicity, slenderness and quality of finishes, which fit discreetly into the urban environment, without harming the landscape or the historical heritage present here", now defends the Chamber, in the issued statement. .

For the elaboration of the project, explains the municipality, «eight multidisciplinary teams were invited (two of them from Tavira), with the necessary technical competence and experience in projects in the area. The selection was made by municipal technicians, equally experienced, competent and knowledgeable, who, among other award criteria, evaluated the aesthetic framework in the surroundings».

The project was eventually awarded to the company A2P – Estudos e Projetos, Lda. and subscribed by A2P, Estudos e Projetos, Lda. (structure and foundations), Appleton & Domingos, Arquitectos, Lda. (architecture), Natural Works (lighting) and by the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon (survey and color proposal), «all of them reputable entities».

By carrying out this requalification project, «it is the municipality's intention to provide physical and functional diversity in recreational, sporting and economic spaces. The installation of recreational, leisure and sports equipment, as well as support for artisanal fishing vessels, passengers and maritime-tourism, will provide an environment that appeals to the enjoyment of the river and its surroundings».

In this communiqué, the Chamber does not shy away from accusing Tavira Semper, arguing that the position of the municipality "has been coherent from the start", contrary to this movement that has had "oscillations".

If, at first, “he vehemently claimed to be against the construction of a new bridge in Tavira, he now comes to say that he is not”.

Therefore, despite «respecting the plurality of opinions», the municipality criticizes «all this buzz around the new bridge» as «it has only been damaging the image of a city that has been able to maintain its essence and that will never come out hampered by this new crossing'.

The executive also says that “the preservation and sustainable development of Tavira are a priority for the executive”.

This intervention is part of the redevelopment of the city's riverfronts, a project in progress (preliminary study phase), which will be developed on the left bank from the Séqua Verde Park to the Largo José Joaquim Jara wharf and on the right bank between the Discoveries and Santiago bridges.

The work integrates a series of actions that aim to requalify the public space, promote new dynamics on the margins, improve accessibility and mobility.
