Faro signs twinning protocol with Matola (Mozambique)

Matola municipality has about 1,6 million inhabitants

The Municipality of Faro will sign, this Thursday, 21 November, a twinning protocol with the city of Matola, in Mozambique.

In this regard, Rogério Bacalhau, mayor, leaves this Tuesday for Mozambique to formalize the twinning protocol, in compliance with the deliberation of the Municipal Assembly of Faro, taken at the September 20 session.

The agreement will be signed at the Salão Nobre of the Matola Municipality's headquarters building on the 21st of November, in the presence of local and provincial authorities and, also, the Portuguese Embassy in Maputo.

The document aims to develop cooperation actions in the areas of municipal administration, economic and business development, education and sport, culture, arts, tourism and health.

During the visit, concrete actions for collaboration in areas such as cemetery management, sanitation, waste management, education for educational technologies and the formulation of exchanges will be studied.

This protocol was born from the similarities found between the two municipalities, leaving open a basis for bilateral cooperation and convergence of interests in fields of business activity, strengthening socio-economic relations.

A relationship that was only possible thanks to the common use of the Portuguese language, the convergence of historical and cultural interests, territorial and economic similarities and the connection between the two peoples», emphasizes the Algarve municipality.

To Rogério Bacalhau, president of the Chamber of Faro, this is a far-reaching initiative because "decentralized cooperation, based on local and regional authorities and involving institutions of the same level, can do more for friendship and cooperation between peoples than dozens of commercial agreements between States" .

With the mayor from Faro, Henrique Ascenco Gomes, Chief of Staff of the Presidency and responsible for the city's international cooperation, follows.

The municipality of Matola is the capital of Maputo province and borders the districts of Marracuene, Moamba, Boane and Maputo city. With about 1,6 million inhabitants, it is the most populous city in Mozambique.

The municipality is divided into three administrative posts: Matola-Sede, Machava and Infulene, which in turn are subdivided into 42 districts. It has the largest industrial park in Mozambique and one of the best located port terminals for coal, aluminum exports, cereal and sugar unloading. It also has one of the largest fuel depot centers.

Thanks to its privileged location at the confluence of the Matola River with the Indian Ocean, it offers great potential for the development of tourist activities. The city of Matola is also one of the gateways to all tourist sources in the Republic of South Africa and Swaziland.
