Cristóvão Norte accuses CHUA of dismissing CMRSul's doctor

CHUA's Board of Directors ensures that it maintains the intention to reach the «maximum capacity» of CMRSul

The University Hospital Center of the Algarve (CHUA) dismissed a medical specialist at the Center for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation of the South (CMRSul), despite being "operating on half-gas", accused today, 28th, Cristóvão Norte, deputy of the PSD elected by the Algarve.

From CHUA, after contacting the Sul Informação, comes the guarantee that the Board of Directors (CA) «maintains its intention to reach its maximum capacity and has no intention of closing down areas».

Cristóvão Norte went public to denounce that, last week, those responsible for the Algarve hospitals decided to “transfer at least one specialist doctor – probably the person with the most experience in the unit -, which reveals that the intention is not to strengthen the center, reoccupy the beds and meet the pressing needs of many citizens, but rather stripping this unit».

Confronted with this accusation, CHUA said that the chairman of the CA “will not comment on issues of daily internal management and organization”.

The same entity says it works "daily in order to continue to ensure the best provision of health care to the population."

Cristóvão Norte recalled that, when CMRSul was integrated into CHUA, in 2018, the Government promised "that this unit would be fully operational" by the end of that year.

«This commitment was left unfulfilled, since of the 54 available beds, 18 are closed, registering a significant waiting list. The Center is characterized by providing, in its area of influence (districts of Beja and Faro), differentiated rehabilitation care for people with severe functional limitations, in inpatient, day hospital and outpatient regimes, with an intensive nature», he said.

«It gives pity to all who know or have benefited from CMRSul that health care that saves lives, that gives hope is being wasted. These are pathologies that have a very narrow therapeutic window. Who has a stroke, for example, cannot wait months for treatment. Health postponed, health denied», illustrated the PSD deputy.

The options to be taken, he added, «may open the door to the total disqualification of CMRSul, transforming it into a repository of urgent patients in the Algarve's hospitals. How do you send doctors away saying they are not needed when the institution is working on half-gas?».

The PSD deputies elected by the Algarve, Cristóvão Norte, Rui Cristina and Ofélia Ramos, will “confront the Government, in a future hearing of the Minister of Health, on these serious facts and the inability to guarantee the functioning of CMRSul, as well as other initiatives in articulation with Councilor Bruno Sousa Costa of the City Council of São Brás do Alportel».
