CHUA admits flaws in Urology, Ophthalmology and Orthopedics denounced by Deputy Cristóvão Norte

Parliamentarian affirms that "without fixing doctors, the problem is not solved and patients feel unprotected"

The Urology Urgency will be closed in hospitals in the Algarve this long weekend, while on Saturday there will be no ophthalmology. Between 2 and 4, there will also be no Orthopedics emergency in Portimão, while in Faro, from “Saturday at the end of the afternoon until Monday at dawn, there will only be one doctor on duty, which is clearly insufficient to meet the needs”. The denunciation was made today by the social-democratic deputy of the Algarve, Cristóvão Norte.

Contacted by Sul Informação, the Board of Directors of the University Hospital Center of the Algarve admits the flaws. «The shortages of medical human resources in our Hospital Center are well known and, for this reason, we have been working rigorously internally in the preparation and organization of work, even in non-ideal situations, where teams may be incomplete , it is possible to respond to our users, either in the region, or using the hospital referral network».

Those responsible for CHUA still try to reassure the people of the Algarve, saying that "in case of emergency, users should always go to an emergency service at the University Hospital Center of the Algarve, where they will be treated locally." "If the clinical situation justifies it, they will be referred for treatment at another health facility," adds CHUA.

Cristóvão Norte, PSD deputy for the Algarve, said in a statement sent to newsrooms that “these situations are increasingly the rule and not the exception in the Algarve. Without fixing doctors, the problem is not solved and the patients feel unprotected and in order to have access to health, they either have money and go either private or they are defenseless».

For the parliamentarian, "it is very understandable that patients go to the emergency room, a consultation takes years, all deadlines are exceeded and this is equivalent to not having access to health care."

Taking into account the health situation in the Algarve region, PSD deputies Cristóvão Norte, Rui Cristina and Ofélia Ramos, elected by the Algarve, announce that they will "question the Government about these constant failures", demanding that "the critical situation that the region facing health is a priority for government intervention”.
