The Municipality of Portimão has just announced, in a statement sent to newsrooms, that it will suspend the PDM in Praia da Rocha to "prevent situations similar" to that of Vivenda Compostela, the historic house that is being demolished in that seaside resort, like the Sul Informação today reported.

The municipality reveals that the «demolition works that are taking place at Vivenda Compostela result from a licensing process started in 2011, approved before the 2013 Municipal Elections», that is, before the election of Isilda Gomes as mayor.

The statement guarantees that, "since that time [2013] it has followed the respective legal procedures", so the demolition of Vivenda Compostela, which the City Council still says it has tried to stop today, "is a consequence of that approval".

The municipality adds that "has recently tried to work with the legitimate owner, a solution that does not involve the demolition of the building", but, despite the fact that the destruction of the house has stopped during the afternoon, these "negotiations" were "unfruitful , by virtue of the acquired rights and the high indemnities that the revocation of administrative acts such as this entail”.

Therefore, in order to prevent similar situations from happening, the executive will propose, «in the next Council meeting, the suspension of the Municipal Master Plan of Portimão for the Praia da Rocha area and the definition of the respective preventive measures».

"This decision comes within the current framework of the PDM review and considering the strong urban and social dynamics seen in Portimão, with special emphasis on the Praia da Rocha area," the statement added.

The municipality also considers that it is crucial to prevent the continued densification of the building, the protection of sensitive areas, with special emphasis on the cliffs, as well as allowing the enhancement of the integrated urban system, the profitability of infrastructure and collective equipment and also the enhancement and qualification of the public space”.

To what Sul Informação he found that the house will be completely demolished to continue the construction of the new building, which is a project signed by the Algarve architect Luís Veríssimo, current president of the Parish Council of Ferragudo, in the neighboring municipality of Lagoa.
