VRSA chamber increases house rents, but little by little

Rents were no longer updated based on income for a long time.

Vila Real de Santo António City Council is going to increase the rents of municipal houses, but promises to do so in a phased manner, "to safeguard family income".

The municipality of Vila Real has revised the regulatory diplomas for social housing and "began the process of updating and revising the rents for housing owned by the municipality".

"The measure aims to promote greater equity and justice in payments made by households and complies with the legal regime of supported renting for housing, which has been in force since 2015, but had not yet been applied", according to the Chamber of VRSA .

This update will be carried out in a phased manner, which means that, in the first year, «the amount of the rent will correspond to the previous rent, plus a third of the amount of the increase verified».

"In the second and third years, the amount of rent paid in each of the previous years is increased by another third of the increase", added the municipality.

In this way, the Chamber prevents "families from suffering sudden increases in rents, phasing the implementation of updated values to all tenants who are able to benefit from this regime".

To simplify the process, the updates will be automatic, "submission of an own application is waived".

This measure will come into force on January 1, 2020, "since the Municipality, in recent years, has only applied the annual update provided for in paragraph 2 of article 1077 of the Civil Code, which is associated with the inflation rate, not having promoted the updating of income based on the composition or income of the household».
