Starting tomorrow: Surgeons refuse additional work in the Emergency Room of the Hospital de Faro

"Manifestly poor" working conditions are at the root of the decision.

Hospital surgeons Faro they will refuse to do extra work in the Emergency Department, as of this Sunday, December 1st, reports this Saturday the newspaper «Expresso».

Because of this, throughout the month of December, there should be several shifts without any surgeon in the Emergency Room. Expresso adds that there will also be days when only a single surgeon will be on duty, while on others the stopover will only be ensured by contracted external doctors.

The decision of the surgeons of the unit of Faro from the University Hospital Center of the Algarve (CHUA) was taken over due to “manifestly deficient” working conditions.

In a letter sent to the Board of Directors of CHUA at the end of October, which the newspaper Expresso cites, the clinicians set out the reasons for their decision: the “systematic inexistence of beds for the internment of urgent patients”, the “recurrent lack of access to the block operative in a time considered optimal” or the “systematic obstacles to the performance of complementary diagnostic exams”.

Surgeons also complain about the excessive time they have to provide service in the Emergency Room, as they have long exceeded the 200 hours of overtime work per year provided for by law.

Ao Expresso, Ana Paula Gonçalves, administrator of the University Hospital Center of the Algarve, acknowledged the many hours that surgeons have been working in the Emergency Department of Faro, adding that "there will be an increase in the hiring of external doctors". That responsible also guaranteed that "there will be no shifts without surgeons in December."

This Saturday, reacting to the news, Health Minister Marta Temido guaranteed that the stopovers «are assured» at the University Hospital Center of the Algarve, since there is a «significant additional number» of doctors.
