Portimão hosts the inaugural concert of the Algarve Organ Festival

The concerts take place at 21 pm and are free to enter.

The kick-off concert of Algarve Organ Festival will take place on the 1st of November at the Igreja Matriz in Portimão, with the organist Gyula Szilágyi and the Coral Adágio, in the interpretation of the Magnificat by João Rodrigues Esteves.

The pipe organ of the Igreja Matriz in Portimão, restored last year, is already prepared for another edition of this Festival, which aims to «continue to win new audiences to enjoy organ music, captivate residents to preserve heritage instruments, disseminate Portuguese and classical music and spread enthusiasm throughout the Algarve by the historical bodies».

Gyula Szilágyi studied at the Conservatory in Amsterdam with Jacques van Oortmerssen and Hans van Nieuwkoop (organ), Jan Marisse Huizing (piano) and Paul van Nevel (Ancient Music).

He performed numerous concerts in many historical organs of the Iberian Peninsula and participated in restoration projects of historical organs in Jaén, Cádiz and Seville.

Conducted courses and seminars on interpretation. In 2018, he performed, in seven didactic concerts, the Organic Faculty complete (69 goals) by Francisco Correa de Arauxo.

He obtained his doctorate in organ performance at the Liszt Ferenc University of Music, in Budapest, with the dissertation “The Battle – The life of a genre in the art of the Iberian organ”. He is associate professor of organ and liturgical organ at the Faculty of Music at the University of Debrecen.

 

Grupo Coral Adágio was born in Portimão in 1989. Its repertoire includes pieces from the Renaissance to the present, from sacred polyphony to black spiritual people, passing through popular music, Portuguese and other countries.

His career includes trips to the Azores (1998), Italy (2000), Holland and Germany (2002), Spain (2002 and 2009), performances in several Radio (RDP) and Television (RTP) programs and interpretation of masses and outstanding operas. They performed concerts with Orquestra do Algarve and Orquestra do Norte.

In 2008 he recorded his first exclusive CD, (L)atitudeS. He was awarded the Municipal Medal of Merit, Bronze degree (2002) and Silver degree (2008). Its artistic director is conductor António Alves Alferes Pereira.

António Alves completed the General Piano Course at the Algarve Conservatory and the Degree in Musical Sciences at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

He completed his Master's Degree in Regional and Local History (Faculty of Letters of the Universidade Clássica de Lisboa), having defended his thesis on “A Sé de Faro – Men and Musical Action (1716/1738)”. He has dedicated himself to choral direction for several years, teaches Music Education and teaches at the Academy of Music in Portimão.

 

On November 8, at 21 pm, the Igreja Matriz in Portimão will also receive chamber music for organ and voice, respectively with André Ferreira and Teresa Duarte, in the program “Do lamento à exaltação”.

André Ferreira began his organ studies with António Esteireiro at the Instituto Gregoriano de Lisboa, continuing with Jos van der Kooy at the Conservatory of The Hague. He has a degree in Organ at the Amsterdam Conservatory, where he studied with Jacques van Oortmerssen, and worked with Pieter van Dijk.

Completed a Masters in Organ at the Lisbon Superior School of Music, under the supervision of João Vaz. As a soloist or integrated in several musical groups, he has already given recitals in Portugal, Spain, Italy and Holland. He works as organist with the Parish of S. Tomás de Aquino and with the Parish of Santa Maria de Belém, Mosteiro dos Jerónimos.

He teaches Organ at the Diocesan School of Sacred Music of the Patriarchate of Lisbon, at the Mafra Conservatory and at the Cathedral of Faro.

Teresa Duarte completed two degrees in Singing, at the Lisbon Superior School of Music and at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. In Amsterdam, he had the opportunity to work with Sasja Hunnego, Floris Visser, Ira Siff, Margreet Honig and Jos van Veldhoven, among others. In opera, he performed Elle (La Voix Humaine, Poulenc), Dido (Dido and Aeneas, Purcell), Pamina (Die Zauberflöte, Mozart) and Suor Dolcina (Suor Angelica, Puccini).

As a member of the Gulbenkian Choir, it has been directed by Michel Corboz, Lorenzo Viotti, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Philippe Herreweghe, John Nelson, Joana Carneiro, Lawrence Foster, Paul MacCreesh and Antoni Ros Marbà, among others. Teresa has collaborated with several chamber music ensembles, having a preference for Early Music repertoire.

 

Associação Música XXI presents the 12th edition of Algarve Organ Festival, from the 1st to the 30th of November, in the Churches of Faro, Portimão, Loulé (Boliqueime) and Tavira. There will be 15 presentations, with seven organists and several singers/instrumentalists distributed in 12 concerts, a pedagogical concert, a presentation by students from the Organ School and a mass accompanied by the organ.

The concerts take place at 21 pm and are free to enter.

The Algarve Organ Festival 2019 has the support of the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve and the Municipalities of Faro, Loulé, Portimão and Tavira, with support for the dissemination of the Algarve Tourism Region and communication partners Antena 2, Sul Informação and FM Street.

It also has a partnership with the Cabido da Sé de Faro, of the Order of Carmo of Faro, of the Parishes of Portimão, Boliqueime and Tavira and of the Misericórdia of Tavira.
