Lagoa and Darthmouth, in the state of New Hampshire, in the United States of America, are preparing a twinning agreement.
This process began in March 2018, when the executive from Lagoa was invited by the twin town of Lagoa dos Açores to participate in the Meeting of Sister Cities, in Massachusetts, in the United States of America.
At that time, "several meetings were held by both executives".
Now, it was the turn of Shawn McDonald, president of the village of Darmouth, to visit Portugal, on the 1st of October. The representative of the American Village was received by Luís Encarnação, Mayor of Lagoa, for a presentation of greetings, exchange of memories and analysis of the common points between Dartmouth and
Lagoon.
According to the Câmara de Lagoa, «the president of Dartmouth was on a visit for a week, in order to get to know the best of Lagoa, its tourist product, its cuisine and wines, from golf to sun and beach, as well. like all the material and immaterial cultural component».
During this visit, «the principles of the future twinning protocol were agreed upon, after the presentation of both councils and their potential and ways of working and joint initiatives», adds the municipality.
For Luís Encarnação, «this will not be, just another twinning, but aims very clear and outlined objectives based on economic interaction, on tourism promotion in an extremely important market in which Lagoa wants to position itself, on policies aimed at education and for culture as well as in the field of public governance'.
Câmara de Lagoa reveals that «some of the intentions of this twinning are to develop scholarship programs for students from Lagoa at the UMASS Dartmouth Marine Biology University and at the UMASS Dartmouth School of Innovation, as well as exchange projects for students and professors».
It is also planned to create a professional internship program for Lagoa students, the tourist promotion of Lagoa in the American market and the dissemination of the territory to attract investments and promote wine, among other things.
The Lagoa Chamber foresees that the formalization of the Lagoa Twinning with Dartmouth will take place in March 2020, in the United States.
