Social dance classes are helping to promote active and healthy aging in Quarteira.

In the last two years, the Junta de Freguesia from Quarteirense has been promoting a project that “gives the population with more than 40 years the opportunity to learn, practice dances, as well as create interpersonal relationships in groups”.

Until now, this initiative has had «several dozen motivated students», who have been learning dances with trainer Larisa Shumskaya, graduated from the University of Arts in Tombov, Russia, according to the Junta de Quarteira.

Among other events, the group was present at the 2018 Summer Fair, 2018 Christmas Fair, 2019 Quarteira City Day and the solidarity event “Ajudar a Beatriz”.

“Dance has numerous benefits for the senior population. In addition to the physical exercise that is so important in this age group, this activity helps to improve mental health and, consequently, quality of life. In addition, the classes are an important tool in the fight against loneliness, fostering interaction between all participants», framed the city of Quarteirense.

Classes take place weekly in the Parish Council Auditorium and are divided into two groups: The initiation group, for all first-time subscribers, with classes on Wednesdays, from 15:45 pm to 16:45 pm, and the level II group, for students continuation, with classes on Mondays, from 15:45 to 16:45.

Registration for social dance classes can be made at the Parish Council office or online. Participation is subject to the existing vacancies, only requiring the payment of an annual insurance in the amount of ten euros.
