Barão de São João returns to walks with art

Festival will take place between November 1st and 3rd

Art and hiking come together again in Barão de São João, in Lagos, in the second edition of the hiking festival “Walk & Art Fest”, which will take place between 1 and 3 November.

The small village, marked for being the “home” of many artists and for being located next to the National Forest with which it shares its name, host this event again organized by the Municipality of Lagos and the Almargem Association.

In all, there are 63 activities, ranging from hiking, some of them themed (botany, geology, archeology, heritage, birdwatching), environmental education activities for the youngest, workshops, wellness activities (Yoga, Qi Gong – Chi Kung, Luohan QiGong, Tai Chi, Meditation) and gatherings where there will be no lack of music.

This year, it will be possible to take two routes at the new Lagos Mountain Bike Center, an infrastructure that runs from the Barão de São João Cultural Center and includes 300 kilometers of cycling routes, in the forest and beyond, as well as taking a guided tour of the Capela do Monte, designed by the architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, news of this second edition.

All of this will be combined with «a strong artistic component, whose dynamism will be the responsibility of local artists who make Barão de São João an unforgettable and special village», according to the organization.

«These artists will be involved in the promotion of activities ranging from short stories in the forest, artistic performance, “Walking and Drawing in the Forest”, an artistic path and “Arte com Feltro”. All participants will also be invited to visit an exhibition consisting of 30 pieces by 14 different artists, installed on a route that passes through the village, through the forest and culminates in the Cultural Centre, the venue for the event», they added.

On the other hand, a nature conservation action will be carried out in the National Forest. Participants at the event are invited to join the activities carried out by technicians from the Institute for Nature and Forest Conservation, which will streamline actions for the Control of Invasive Plants, during which the areas where the sowing carried out last year will be re-seeded was unsuccessful.

Registration for the different activities opened today and can be made on the event website.

The initiative is part of the event calendar Algarve Walking Season (AWS) which includes the other two hiking festivals existing in the Region (Walking Festival Ameixial and Alcoutim Walking Festival).

The AWS is an initiative coordinated by the QRER Cooperative – Cooperative for the Development of Low Density Territories, approved under an application from the Support Line for the Development of Tourism in the Interior, promoted by Turismo de Portugal/Region of Tourism of the Algarve.

In 2019, the event has, as in the 1st edition, several partnerships with tourist entertainment companies and official entities that will promote many of these actions free of charge.
