A new Bus Terminal whose works should start «within two weeks» and two years of investment in the refurbishment and maintenance of the school park and sports facilities in São Brás de Alportel, among others.

These are some of the factors that lead the São Brasense executive to take an "extremely positive balance" of the first half of the current municipal mandate, in a session that took place yesterday, Thursday, at the Alto da Arroteia viewpoint.

The team led by mayor Vítor Guerreiro chose this emblematic place, where you have a privileged view over the town and much of the county, to account for what it has been doing, but also what is in the pipeline, in the balance of the first two years of office.

And what is almost there are the long announced construction works of a new Bus Terminal in São Brás de Alportel, an intervention that has already been awarded and “just wait for the approval of the Court of Auditors. We hope it starts within two weeks», revealed Vítor Guerreiro.

This intervention, admitted the São Brasense mayor, “took a little longer than expected, because we realized that it would be possible to have the participation of community funds”. Of this, half of the nearly half a million euros needed to carry out the work will come from the European Union.

Making the most of the co-financing opportunities has been, moreover, one of the hallmarks of the executive PS of the São Brás de Alportel Chamber.

“We don't swim in money and we have to manage it rigorously and in a balanced way. Whenever possible, we carry out works using funds from the European Union», summed up the São-Brasense agent.

From what was the mandate until now, Vítor Guerreiro highlighted the bet made in education and in sports equipment.

In the first case, "a pre-school and a first cycle room" was opened to respond to the increase in requests, taking into account that São Brás continues to have a good annual birth rate - "80 to 100" - for a small mountain council.

Maintenance works were also carried out at the 1st cycle schools in Mesquita and Vilarinhos, and a new entrance was built at EB1 nº1 in São Brás de Alportel, among other investments. At school nº1, the fiber cement tiles were removed and photovoltaic solar panels were installed on the roof, an intervention that will be repeated next summer at EB1 nº2.

The work at this educational establishment did not take place sooner because the contractor who won the competition withdrew and it was not possible to find a replacement in good time.

«During the time of crisis, as we are a Chamber that pays well and in a short time, it was easy to get someone to do works in São Brás. Nowadays, it is difficult to get it and it is more expensive», illustrated Vítor Guerreiro.

This has led to some works being delayed, as the competitions are deserted, which forces the Chamber to relaunch them, with more associated funds.

Another area in which the City Council of São Brás de Alportel invested was in the renovation and maintenance of sports equipment. In this field, the most important work was the requalification of the uncovered municipal swimming pools, but other interventions were also carried out, namely improvements in the municipal pavilion, the multi-sport and other equipment.

Basically, it is about maintaining what already exists, to avoid having to build new infrastructures. “We already have the main equipment. Now, we have to take care of them», illustrated Acácio Martins, councilor responsible for sport and urbanism.

The mayor of São Brás de Alportel also highlighted the area of social action, namely the creation of “a house for social emergency, to be used in situations where a quick response has to be given”.

Also in this field, Marlene Guerreiro, vice president of the municipality, highlighted the strong involvement of entities in the municipality and the community in helping others.

“We have been adding several initiatives from institutions, but also from individuals. For example, there is a group of citizens of various nationalities, the Helping Hands, who mobilized to help in the acquisition of prostheses and other material, mainly for children», illustrated the councilor.

The renovation of the historic centre, which «has been completely re-qualified or about to become one», the Inclusion Desk created this year and the improvement of the water supply system, to reduce unnecessary losses and expenses, were other measures highlighted in this report. .

David Gonçalves, councilor with responsibility for animal welfare, highlighted the work done in this area. «We were the first municipality to adhere to veterinary checks and, in recent years, we have invested almost 10 thousand euros in the sterilization of stray animals. It is an added expense that we have, but it demonstrates our commitment to solving this problem”.
