Portimão hosts national closing of European Sport Week

European Sport Week is an initiative of the European Commission

The 5th edition of the European Sport Week, which runs from the 23rd to the 30th of September, will close at national level, in Portimão.

According to the Portimão City Council, «a vast set of proposals were prepared with the aim of challenging citizens to practice physical activity in the different municipal sports facilities, free of charge».

One of the highlights of the schedule for the Municipal Paralympic Day, scheduled for the Marina de Portimão on 26 September, with the free availability of eight modalities, guided by specialized technicians, that anyone interested can try between 10:00 and 16:00.

Handball and wheelchair basketball, boccia, paracanoeing, paracycling, judo, table tennis and sailing are the available sports, with the presence of athletes Joana Santos (judo), Jorge Pina (athletics), Luís Costa (paracycling) and Norberto Mourão (paracanoeing).

The opening ceremony is scheduled to start at 10:00 am, with the presence of João Paulo Rebelo, Secretary of State for Youth and Sports, José Manuel Lourenço, president of the Paralympic Committee of Portugal, and Isilda Gomes, mayor of Portimão.

But during this intense week, there will be many sports available to residents: Portimão Sports Complex (yoga and fit power), Alvor Sports Complex (hydrogymnastics, free swimming and tennis), Mexilhoeira Grande Sports Complex (free swimming, circuit, fit power and maintenance swimming for adults) and in the gyms of EB 2,3 Júdice Fialho and EB 2,3 D. João II de Alvor (karate).

In competitive terms, the European City of Sport (CED 2019) will host between 27 and 29 September a series of high-level events, such as the 13th “Vítor Hugo” Cup of the Women's Basketball League (Pavilhão da Escola da Bemposta and Pavilhão Gimnodesportivo de Portimão), the National Adapted Sailing Championship (Portimão Marina), the Portimão Padel Open 2019 (Municipal Tennis Complex) and the Aquabike – European Endurance Championship (Praia da Rocha).

The “EMPOWER(U): Empowerment for Life & Sport” initiative will take place between the 23rd and 27th of September at the Pousada da Juventude and elsewhere in Portimão, with the participation of 40 teenagers representing ten organizations from European countries.

The young people will be received at 12:00 on the 23rd by the municipal executive of Portimão in the main hall of Paços do Concelho.

In educational terms, the celebrations of the European Day of Sport at School, scheduled for September 27 at the Júdice Fialho School Grouping, organized by CNAPEF – National Council of Associations of Physical Education and Sport Professionals, should be held, as well as the Day European Physical Education Teacher, marked on the 28th, through a set of sports activities carried out by and for these professionals, also organized by CNAPEF.

 

 

The program includes a boat trip along the coast, in which a hundred teachers will participate, and a ceremony in honor of Portuguese Physical Education teachers, which will take place at 15:00 at Casa Manuel Teixeira Gomes. From 21 pm onwards, Aguahotels Riverside will receive the open talk “The importance of Physical Education at School”.

In the context of training, one of the main areas of CED 2019, the Level I Triathlon Referee Course, organized by the Portuguese Federation of Triathlon Portugal and the Portuguese Triathlon Association, will take place on the 28th of September at the Manuel Teixeira Gomes Municipal Library Portugal Triathlon Referees.

Among other actions, there will also be the Day of Sports at Work, scheduled for September 25, in which public and private entities will be invited to promote physical and sporting activities for their workers.

In turn, on the 28th and 29th of September, the 3rd Great Race of Rolling Carts of Mexilhoeira Grande will attract many people to this typical locality that revives a very common practice of children and young people from a few decades ago.

The European Sport Week program also includes World Heart Day, being presented on September 27 at Casa Manuel Teixeira Gomes, from 16:00, the Municipal Program DAE by the Municipal Civil Protection Service of Portimão, followed by 16:45 pm in the riverside area of ​​the city, a practical exercise in the use of AED (Automatic External Defibrillation) on public roads.

As part of the same anniversary, the lecture “Sports and Heart” is scheduled for 19:00 on September 28, at Casa Manuel Teixeira Gomes, with free entry and promoted by the Portuguese Federation of Cardiology.

On September 29, World Heart Day, at 21 pm, the auditorium of the Portimão Museum will host a violin and guitar recital by João Pedro Cunha and Zoran Stojanovic. The fundraising reverts to the Algarve Delegation of the Fundação Portuguesa de Cardiologia. Tickets cost 30 euros.

The official closure of the European Sport Week is scheduled for 9:30 am on September 29, next to Portimão Arena, with the high point of the Solidarity March/Run – “Walk of Memory”, which marks the World Day of Alzheimer's Disease, with the confirmed participation of about 1500 people from all over the Algarve.

The collected donations will be destined to the Alzheimer Portugal association, and registrations must be made. here

In addition to Vítor Pataco, president of the Portuguese Sports and Youth Institute, some outstanding athletes from the Algarve will be present at the closing of the SED, such as judoka Ana Cachola, athlete Ezequiel Canário, canoeist Miguel Batista and Teresa Duarte, champion world underwater fishing.

Between 9:30 am and 13:00 pm it will be possible to practice various sports activities (volleyball, rugby, freestyle skating, handball, karate, boxing, tennis, basketball, adapted sports, golf, gymnastics, skating, table tennis, cycling, water sports, chess and judo), organized by the IPDJ and the City Council, in collaboration with the council's clubs.

On the occasion, the program "Exercise and Health" will be presented, which will start on October 1st, International Day of the Elderly, with a mega senior gymnastics class taking place between 10:00 and 12:00 on 30 September. Pavilhão Gimnodesportivo de Portimão, with free entry.

The European Sport Week is an initiative of the European Commission and its main objective is to promote the benefits of the regular practice of sport, being held simultaneously in 38 countries, being coordinated between us by the IPDJ.
