Lagos approves regulation that allows the Chamber to support private leasing

Regulation will now be submitted to public consultation

The Municipality of Lagos approved the Municipal Regulation to Support Private Lease, «an instrument that aims to create the conditions for a legal and administrative framework so that the municipality can financially support all those who seek to satisfy this essential need», announced the municipality.

The proposal approved at the Chamber Meeting - which will be submitted to 30 working days of public consultation before going to the Municipal Assembly -, "has as its object the attribution of economic support for the rental of real estate for housing purposes, being aimed at residents and households who have a valid lease in the geographical area of the municipality of Lagos, have resided there for at least one year or have a work contract in the municipality for a minimum duration of one year, and are holders of a duly declared lease or promissory contract in finance'.

In addition to these basic conditions, there are others that tenderers will have to comply with, "related for example to the effort rate and other factors, which will determine the eligibility of the candidates".

«The economic support to be granted will be valid for a period of one year, renewable annually up to a maximum limit of 3 years, which may be exceeded only in exceptional cases, for a period of one year, by means of a duly substantiated prior order. The contribution values vary between 15 and 25% of the rent, depending on the level of effort rate in which the household is located», framed the City of Lagos.

«This municipal regulation is intended, therefore, to be complementary to the recent instruments implemented by the Government, to promote an expanded offer of housing, and may contribute to guaranteeing access to housing in Lagos, and should be understood as a response specifically aimed at the population segment that , not being needy, cannot access housing through the current market», concluded the Câmara de Lagos.
