An inspection action, within the scope of the fight against illegal fishing in the Ria Formosa, namely of seahorses, took place this week, in an initiative of the Algarve regional directorate of the Institute for Nature and Forest Conservation (ICNF) and the Control Unit Coast of the GNR.

The operation resulted in 13 notices: four relating to the harvesting of clams and cockles in a prohibited area, three to recreational fishing, one fish escape from the auction house, two unidentified fishing nets, two prohibited trawls and one with prohibited pots, as well as, the seizure of several prohibited or abandoned fishing gears.

The ICNF stresses that 'illegal fishing in the Ria Formosa has contributed to the degradation of seagrass habitats, jeopardizing the ria's mothering function, and simultaneously causing a decrease in the number of marine specimens, such as horses. for example'.

"These inspection actions are aimed at discouraging illegal practices that strongly degrade an area with high natural value," he adds.

Twenty-one agents were involved in the operation, including nine Nature Watchers and 21 Military personnel, using four vessels (two from ICNF and two from UCC) and six vehicles (three from ICNF and three from UCC).
