Tavira adheres to “Diabetes on the move”

Program is coordinated by the General Directorate of Health

Tavira joined the “Diabetes em Movimento” program, an initiative that will take place at the Dr. Eduardo Mansinho Municipal Pavilion, from October 2019 to June 2020, on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays, between 9:30 am and 11:00 am.

“Diabetes in Motion” is aimed at people with type 2 diabetes and aims to promote the adoption of a healthy lifestyle, through sports. This is "an effective way to prevent complications and control blood glucose levels", explains the Câmara de Tavira.

According to the municipality, «physical exercise is beneficial, as it stimulates the production of insulin and facilitates its transport to the cells. The regular practice of sport provides the reduction of visceral fat, thus reducing insulin resistance, that is, it improves the action of insulin in the body and helps control the disease».

By joining this program, the Municipality of Tavira intends to “contribute to improving the quality of life of residents with type 2 diabetes and promote the Mediterranean lifestyle, which calls for the adoption of regular physical exercise and a varied diet'.

Type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease that affects the way the body metabolizes glucose, the body's main source of energy.

For more information, interested parties should consult their doctor or family nurse or the program's Facebook page.

This community intervention program, coordinated by the Directorate-General for Health, integrates the Physical Activity Promotion Program (PPAF) and the National Program for Diabetes, with scientific support from the Public Health Institute of the University of Porto (ISPUP) and of the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD).
