The renovation works of the Largo da República garden, in Silves, have already started and should be ready by the beginning of next summer. this space.
The project will focus on the landscape and functional requalification of the garden, through the renovation and creation of green spaces, the laying of new pavement, comprehensive refurbishment of the infrastructure of the water supply, sanitation and rainwater networks (dimensioned for the scale of the city), public lighting, telecommunications, urban furniture (stop shelter, benches and picnic tables, bicycle parking, litter bins, drinking fountains, ecological island), creation of a water element with nebulizers, construction of a building with cafeteria, public toilets and terrace with shading.
«In the technical solutions adopted, we opted for a contemporary approach, promoting recreation and leisure, functionally welcoming and accessible to all, while maintaining the garden's memory through the preservation of characterizing elements (presence of water, large trees size, floristic variety) and the base structure of the garden (longitudinal axes, symmetries and tree alignments). The existing lighting fixtures inside the garden, as they constitute important elements of the image and history of the space, will be recovered and relocated in the west zone, as well as the existing drinking fountain that will also be relocated», described the City Council of Silves.
With regard to the garden space itself, it will maintain three distinct areas: Alameda das Árvores, on the west side, Praça Central and Jardim do Fresco, on the east side.
«The existing arboreal alignments will be maintained as they constitute one of the structural and characterizing elements of the current space. The planting of trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants in considerable numbers will ensure the fundamental component of green spaces», added the municipality.
The requalification of the Jardim do Largo da República «represents a deep and multifaceted intervention, recovering and revitalizing a historic and emblematic space that will lead to the creation of a new centrality in the city of Silves».
Of the more than 1,8 million euros to be invested, 557 will be guaranteed by the European Union.
