The pedestrian and cycling bridge over the Almargem river, between Tavira and Conceição, collapsed and is partially submerged. A temporary situation, guarantees the Chamber of Tavira, which says that it has already consigned the work for the construction of a new bridge in June and that it should be ready before the end of the year.

«The contract was awarded to the company Carmo – Estruturas em Madeiras, SA, in May this year and consigned in June. It is estimated that the intervention will have an execution period of 120 days, with the work of supplying material and preparation for dismantling being currently underway. The assembly of the new bridge is expected to take place between the months of October and November», clarified the Chamber of Tavira.

The decision to build a new bridge, instead of recovering the existing one, was taken on the basis of a report commissioned from a company, «after finding out that this bridge was severely deformed» – which is not accessible.

This technical document indicated that “the bridge had very deficient safety conditions in relation to the regulatory requirements provided for in the law and the detected anomalies called into question its full use, both in terms of pedestrians and cycling. The report recommended its dismantling and the construction of a new bridge».

This was followed by «the opening of the procedure for urgent public tender», which has already resulted in the adjudication and consignment of the work.
