The sardine fishing quota has been increased by the Government by 25%, which will allow the sardine fishing to continue until October. The news was announced this Thursday by Ana Paula Vitorino, Minister of the Sea.
According to the official, in statements to Antena 1, in Peniche, "biomass grew 24% and we took the decision to increase the quota by 25%".
The minister added that there will be an increase of 1800 tons, in relation to the estimated quota of 2181 tons, which fishermen could capture as of this month of August.
With this increase, the total quota rises to 9000 tons. The previous quota agreed between Portugal, Spain and the European Commission was 7181 tonnes.
These new values "keep the safety margin", according to the minister.
Despite this increase in quota, the ban on sardine fishing on Wednesdays remains, as well as the daily capture limits.
