Applications for the new Portimão Municipal Volunteering Award open on 16 September

The award seeks to "recognise the voluntary work of citizens and entities" in the most diverse areas

The Humanitarian Association of the Voluntary Firefighters of Portimão, the Association of Blood Donors of the Barlavento Algarvio, the Teia d'Impulsos. These are just three more visible examples of civil society associations that have been dedicated, for years, to improving everyone's lives through volunteering in the municipality of Portimão.

Last summer, at the time of the great fire in Monchique, a wave of solidarity swept through the Portimonian community, which organized itself to help both the firefighters and the displaced populations from the areas where the flames raged.

This is the framework for the Municipal Volunteering Award, which the City Council of Portimão has just launched and whose candidacies, open to the participation of collective entities and individuals, can be made from 16 September. The new award had been announced by the mayor on Portimão City Day, last December 11th.

For each category, a cash prize of 5000 euros is foreseen.

The Municipal Volunteering Award is thus intended to «support and distinguish the best volunteering practices and promote the exercise of social responsibility and active citizenship, stimulating the presentation of innovative volunteering projects», explains the municipality.

The Prize will distinguish all the masters «the two best candidate projects, one in the singular category and the other in the collective category».

The winners will receive their award on December 5th, International Volunteer Day, in a ceremony where prizes and honorable mentions will be given.

Aimed at corporate bodies, as well as at natural persons, the Award seeks to «recognise the voluntary work of citizens and entities, in the areas of solidarity and health, environment, social economy, education and training that promote the improvement of children's quality of life , young people, elderly people, citizens with disabilities, homeless people, migrants, ethnic groups and other citizens in vulnerable situations with relevant social interest, measurable impact on the lives of recipients».

Five finalists will be selected in each category and awarded two prizes that distinguish the originality and innovation, the depth and number of beneficiaries of the intervention and the contribution to solving the problems identified.

Criteria such as the ability to establish partnerships or the quality of project communication will also be valued, and a short video presentation of the project must be submitted in the application form.

Formal applications open from the 16th of September and close on the 15th of October and must be made online on the municipality's website using the form created for this purpose.
