VRSA chamber removes algae to make beaches 'pleasant'

Algae are harmless but can "become unpleasant"

It is a «frequent and natural phenomenon, without consequences for public health», but the Vila Real de Santo António Council decided to reinforce the cleaning of the municipality's beaches, following the appearance of algae «in high quantities», to make it «still all the beaches in the county are more pleasant».

The municipality of Vila Real announced that the company Ecoambiente would carry out a reinforcement of the cleaning of the sands in the night of 14 to 15 August, with the objective of «minimizing the discomfort caused by the presence of algae».

The municipality of VRSA emphasizes that these algae do not pose any danger, but their presence can sometimes 'become unpleasant'.

Thus, in addition to the manual cleaning of the beaches, carried out daily during the bathing season, which is complemented with mechanical cleaning every three days (Santo António beach and Monte Gordo), there will be this reinforcement to remove the algae.

This operation can only be done at night and when the tide allows it, given the characteristics of the area, the necessary resources involved and the large influx of people».

“Although the algae are completely removed from the beach during the night and in the morning, after the tide fills up again, new algae are often washed away and the situation remains the same. On the other hand, there are times when the algae removal service is delayed due to the fact that the high tide coincides with the period in which it is possible to move the machinery on the sand», warned the Chamber of VRSA.
