Lagoa paid homage to Palma Inácio, its "resistance hero"

Palma Inácio, born in Ferragudo, was a known opponent of the Estado Novo.

The Council of Lagoa and the Parish Council of Ferragudo promoted the conference “Palma Inácio, a Hero of Resistance” to honor “this national hero who was born in Ferragudo”, on the 15th of July.

The initiative, which also served to mark the 10th anniversary of the honoree's death, was attended by writer Luís Vaz, the author of the biography of Hermínio da Palma Inácio, and João Soares, former Minister of Culture.

Born in Ferragudo in 1922, Palma Inácio was notable as one of the main resisters to the Estado Novo, «having, throughout his life, starred in real stories worthy of a film, including two successful escapes, one, the dungeons of PIDE, in Porto, and another, of Aljube», according to the Câmara de Lagoa.

“Several revolutionary actions, such as “Operation Vagô”, “Operation Mondego” and “Operation Covilhã”, have made Palma Inácio famous for his country's struggle to free his country from fascism,” the autarchy added.

“The naive revolutionary, as the poet Natália Correia characterized him, was one of the men most feared by the dictatorship. He always refused, in his modesty, the status of a hero. But it will never be able to refuse the top place that the History of the struggle against tyranny reserves for it. Portugal still has memory and the Parish of Ferragudo and the Council of Lagoa will never forget this son of his. Proof of this is the tribute he received on May 1, 2007, with the presence of Hermínio da Palma Inácio and his friend Mário Soares, in which a tombstone with the following inscription was symbolically unveiled: “Largo Palma Inácio, Hero of the Resistance”, concluded the Chamber.
