Lagoon: Canadian fell 20 meters while climbing cliff

Victim's wife alerted authorities

A 40-year-old Canadian fell this Sunday from a height of 20 meters while climbing a cliff at Praia da Afurada, which is not accessible by land, on the coast of Lagoa. The man suffered several injuries to the body and limbs and was transported to hospital.

According to the Maritime Authority, the victim "had descended the cliff, with about 30 meters, together with the woman and, already during the ascent, the cliff gave way, with the man falling from a height of about 20 meters."

The alert was given by the woman who, upon reaching the top of the cliff, went to Praia dos Caneiros, which is nearby, and alerted the authorities.

The Captain of the Port of Portimão immediately mobilized a vessel, and its crew, from the Ferragudo Lifeguard Station, as well as the picket of the Local Command of the Maritime Police of Portimão, which went overland.

Ferragudo's lifeguard team, who arrived at the scene at 14:50 pm, immobilized the victim, “along with the lifeguards from the beach that is located close to it, who traveled to the site by canoe, providing first aid. ».

The man was transported to the Ferragudo Lifeguard Station, where an ambulance was waiting for him, which took him, conscious, to the hospital at around 15:10 pm.

The Maritime Authority recalls that “the cliffs are, as a rule, unstable and present a risk to people who approach them, so that once again alerts the population to the care to be taken along the cliffs, avoiding walks at the top or next to the cliffs. base'. And, although they do not explicitly recommend it, it is also not advisable for people to take risks by climbing the cliffs.
