June was «very cold month»

This was even the coldest June since 2000

The month of June this year was classified as "very cold in mainland Portugal", has just announced the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).

This was even the coldest June since 2000 and the 13th coldest since 1931.

The mean value of the mean air temperature (18.19 °C) was lower than normal with a deviation of -1.23 °C.

The mean minimum air temperature (11.66°C) was 1.84°C lower than the normal value, being the fourth lowest value since 1931 (the lowest was in 1972, 10.89°C).

The mean value of the maximum air temperature (24.73°C) was 0.63°C lower than the normal value, being the second lowest since 2000 (lowest in 2007).

According to the IPMA, «values of the maximum temperature, in this period, lower than those recorded, occurred in about 30% of the years, since 1931».

From the 1st to the 3rd of June there were air temperature values much higher than the normal value, in particular, the maximum temperature, and day 1 was highlighted with an average value in mainland Portugal of 33.3°C, more 8.0°C in relation to the normal value.

From the 4th to the 15th of the same month, the air temperature values (maximum, average and minimum) were below normal.

The IPMA highlights, on days 5 to 7, values of the maximum temperature much lower than normal (day 6 with a deviation of -5.6 °C). «The minimum air temperature values between the 4th and the 18th of June are also noteworthy, with less than the normal value», says the IPMA.

As for the interval of days between 28 and 30, the air temperature values were higher than normal, especially the maximum air temperature.

The average amount of rainfall in June (23.8 mm) corresponds to about 74% of the monthly normal value.

Even so, the South stands out with values below normal, in particular the interior of Baixo Alentejo and the Algarve.

«At the end of the month, compared to the end of May, there was a significant decrease in the percentage of water in the soil in the North and Center Coast, remaining in the interior North and Center regions, in the region of Vale do Tejo , in Alentejo and Algarve with values below 20% and which, in some places, are very close to the point of permanent withering».

According to the PDSI (Palmer Drought Severity Index), in relation to the end of May, the meteorological drought situation remains at the end of June, with a slight increase in the area in extreme drought in the southern region.

Thus, at the end of last month, the percentage distribution of the drought index in the territory is as follows: 5.9% in the extreme drought class, 28.0% in the severe drought class, 22.7% in the moderate drought class, 40.9% in the drought class weak, 1.9% in the normal class and 0.6% in the light rain class.
