Awarding of prizes to the best confirms the increase in the quality of the Algarve's wines

The Great Gold Medal was awarded to “Vida Nova Reserva IGP Algarve Red 2015”, by Adega do Cantor

The quality of Algarve wines was once again recognized in the most recent edition of the Algarve Wine Contest. After evaluating 111 wines from 24 producers, the jury awarded a total of 33 medals, of which a Grand Gold Medal, 12 Gold and 20 Silver, as Sul Informação already reported.

The much desired Great Gold Medal was awarded to “Vida Nova Reserva IGP Algarve Red 2015”, by Adega do Cantor – Sociedade de Vitivinicultura, Lda.

The awards ceremony for the XII Algarve Wine Contest took place on the 12th of July at the Centro Cultural de Lagos. The Algarve Wine Commission honored the winners in the competition held on the 9th, which had the financial and logistical partnership of the Municipality of Lagos and the technical organization of the Portuguese Sommelier Association (AEP).

The awards ceremony was attended by Bernardo Gouvea, president of the Instituto da Vinha e do Vinho, who was part of the panel responsible for the delivery of the trophies, composed by the secretary general of the Association of Portuguese Municipalities of Wine (José Arruda), the regional director of Agriculture and Fisheries (Pedro Monteiro), the president of the Algarve Tourism Region (João Fernandes) and the president of the Algarve Wine Commission (Sara Silva). Maria Joaquina Matos, Mayor of Lagos, attended the ceremony, congratulating the awarded producers.

Sara Silva gives a positive assessment of the 2019 edition of the Algarve Wine Contest, saying that «this year we had an increase in the number of samples of around 30%, which reveals a very positive trajectory of the contest».

The president of the CVA also highlighted «the good references issued by the AEP judges, regarding the evolution and quality of Algarve wines. We intend to improve the Contest year after year, so we are already preparing the next edition».

«This ceremony aimed to honor the work of the producers, contributing to the increase in the recognition of Algarve Wines», concluded the president of the CVA.

One of the novelties of the XII edition of the Algarve Wine Contest was the creation of the “Vinhos do Algarve” tribute award. With this award, CVA intends to distinguish natural or legal persons whose work has contributed to the improvement and dissemination of Algarve Wines.

In the first edition of the award, Hermínio Rebelo, a name closely linked to Algarve Wines, was distinguished: former head of the chamber of tasters of the CVA and Escanção-Mor of the Confraria dos Enófilos e Gastronomia do Algarve, he was several times a member of the jury of several competitions. wines, including the Algarve Wine Contest and the National Wine Contest.

He was also coordinator of the Restaurant and Oenology classes at the Portimão School of Hotel and Tourism. Hermínio Rebelo was honored at the Awards Ceremony, having given the Grand Gold Medal to Adega do Cantor.
