GP coverage increases to 96% in Lagoa

Lagoa went from a coverage of 55% in 2015 to the current 96%

The percentage of the population of Lagoa with an assigned Family Doctor rose to 96% with the entry of three new General and Family Medicine doctors into the primary care team of the local Health Centre.

According to the Regional Health Administration (ARS) of the Algarve, the three clinicians entered the service in July and their arrival will allow "to extend care coverage to around 5700 users".

«With the beginning of these professionals' functions, the municipality of Lagoa now has a total of 13 General and Family Medicine doctors who provide care to around 23818 users registered at the Lagoa Primary Health Care Unit (UCSP), in the centers of Ferragudo, Estômbar, Porches, Carvoeiro and Parchal», added the same entity.

The ARS emphasizes that this "significant expansion of the coverage rate" takes place "in one of the districts in the windward with greater difficulty in securing doctors". Suffice it to say that in 2015, that is, about 4 years ago, the number of Lagoans with a Family Doctor assigned was around 55%.

The evolution verified “was only possible due to the increase in the number of doctors who in the most recent competitions chose the municipality of Lagoa to work (in 2015 the Health Center had 7 doctors and in 2019 it has a total of 13 doctors)”.

These professionals – who are part of the group of 20 new General and Family Medicine doctors, hired as part of a competition launched this year by the Government, «were received at the beginning of July by the President of the Board of Directors of ARS Algarve, Paulo Morgado , for the signing of the employment contract in public functions for an indefinite period with ARS Algarve».
