International symposium on literature and places reveals new opportunities for tourism

Participants took the Estoi Literary Tour, one of the itineraries that make up the Algarve Literary Route

Promoting reflection on the still little explored relationship between literature, physical space and tourism was one of the objectives of the International Symposium on Literature and Places, which took place at the School of Management, Hospitality and Tourism of the University of Algarve, on 13 June, in an organization of the Lit&Tour Research Cluster.

Other objectives included enhancing the development of projects that cut across the interests of the invited researchers and presenting, to the students and professors present at the symposium, new possibilities for research and for the creation of partnerships.

The symposium consisted of the presentation and sharing among participants of four national and international projects that establish the link between literature and physical space and that showed how this link can be transformed into experiences and products of literary tourism.

The development of this market niche already has some practical cases that were presented: The Atlas of Literary Landscapes as a resource for local and regional tourism, by Daniel Alves, IHC NOVA-FCSH and Natália Constâncio, IELT NOVA-FCSH; Walking and talking: literary tourism and literary trails in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, by Lindy Stiebel, University of KwaZulu-Natal; Al-Mutamid. From poet-king to cultural and tourism route, by Alexandra Rodrigues, CIEO/UAlg-ESGHT and Juan Manuel Cid, Fundación Pública Andaluza El Legado Andalusí; An unexpected route: the Algarve Literary Route, by Sílvia Quinteiro, CEC/UAlg-ESGHT and Rita Baleiro, CEC/UAlg-ESGHT.

After the project presentation session, the participants were invited to take the Estoi Literary Tour, one of the itineraries that make up the Algarve Literary Route.

The event had the support of the Center for Comparative Studies of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Lisbon, the School of Management, Hospitality and Tourism of the University of Algarve and the Union of Parishes of Conceição and Estoi.
