Lavrar o Mar launches a book with the texts of the «Medronho» project

Book is edited by the Municipality of Monchique

The book that brings together texts by Afonso Cruz and Sandro William Junqueira, written on purpose for the «Medronho» project, theater cycle on the top of the Monchique mountains and in the distilleries, which became one of the signatures of the cultural program «Lavrar o Mar », will be released on the 21st of June, at 19 pm, at Monte da Lameira, in the parish of Alferce, with free admission.

«Since three years ago, the texts written by Sandro William Junqueira and Afonso Cruz, two of the most renowned contemporary Portuguese writers, staged by Giacomo Scalisi and interpreted by magnificent actors/actresses, gave body and voice to this culture full of enigmas and singularities, truly unavoidable when thinking about the heritage of the Monchique mountains», recall the project's promoters.

«There were 3 cycles, 30 days of show, 9 actors, 8 distilleries, 2 different poles of the mountain range: Alferce and Marmelete and 1 large fire in between, along with around 9000 little mosquitoes of Medronho drunk to perfection».

«The harvest of these initiatives has fermented and is now reaching a moment of distillation», from which this bilingual book results. It contains all the texts taken to the scene, in the Portuguese and English versions, so that «those who could not follow the entire plot can now relive memories or re-signify the experience».

«Those who have not followed the project before will be able to immerse themselves in the book and in the photographs of the shows and recreate this very particular imagery, in their own measure. In the measure of a glass of arbutus, always close by».

The book was edited by the Municipality of Monchique, and its design was in charge of the company «1000olhos – Imagem e Comunicação». The texts are, as already mentioned, by Afonso Cruz and Sandro William Junqueira, while the photos of the shows are by João Mariano.

«Lavrar o Mar» is a project integrated in the 365 Algarve, a program financed by the Secretaries of State for Culture and Tourism (with Turismo de Portugal and the Algarve Tourism Region), and co-financed by CRESC Algarve 2020 and the General Directorate of the Ministry of Culture's Arts, as well as by the Municipalities of Aljezur and Monchique.

«This is a book that drips the mystic elixir from every page.
This is a book that pays tribute to this culture, know-how and the people of the mountains.
This is a book that reaffirms the approach of contemporaneity to the roots (and fruits) of tradition.
This is a book to go hand-in-hand, between toasts and celebrations, for what's coming and what's coming.
This is a book that, when it opens, knocks down the fourth wall.
This is a book that carries drama, love, toughness, sensitivity, the genuine.
Finally, this is a book that testifies to a journey together, full of adventures, in the time of the mountains.
To share and read without moderation».
