Historical brotherhood between Fuzeta and Ílhavo is (twice) official

Fuseta hosted the 2nd solemn ceremony of the twinning agreement on Saturday

The brotherhood had been around for a long time and was forged in the cod fishing campaigns in Newfoundland. Since 2019, Fuzeta and Ílhavo have been officially sisters, following a twinning agreement signed in May and which was celebrated with pomp and circumstance this Saturday, in the parish of the municipality of Olhão.

After a delegation from Fuzeta traveled to Ílhavo, on May 28, to sign the protocol for the twinning of this location, through the Parish of São Salvador de Ílhavo and the Union of Parishes of Moncarapacho and Fuzeta, on Saturday, the 22nd, it was the turn of a group of inhabitants of Ílhavo to come to the Algarve for the 2nd Solemn Session of the twinning ceremony, which took place at the Prof. Library. Maria José Fraqueza, in Fuzeta.

“For many years these two communities formed a brotherhood in cod fishing that left blood, sweat and lives in the seas of Newfoundland. From now on, it is up to us to leave roots so that in the future this brotherhood continues to last and that exchanges are developed at various levels», considered Manuel Carlos, president of the União de Freguesias de Moncarapacho and Fuzeta, at the ceremony.

“This twinning will walk through the cultural richness of the two peoples. We will never abandon what united us (cod fishing) but we will bring more things to this twinning: our folklore, theatre, the artists… it will be very comprehensive. I hope that the 18th of May and the 22nd of June are marked in our communities», wished, for his part, João Campolargo, president of the Parish Council of São Salvador.

After the signing of the Twinning Protocol, the two presidents inaugurated a monument in the Fuzeta Riverside Zone, called “A Zagaia”, by Pedro Baltazar and which “symbolizes one of the gear used in cod fishing and which contains the plaque alluding to this union between the two fishing communities».

In the evening, Ílhavo's entourage celebrated São João, with a sardine with the Fuzeta community.
