Almargem presents results of the diagnostic study of the Wetlands of the Algarve

Study was funded by application to the Environmental Fund

The study “Valorização da Wetlands of the Algarve” will be presented on the 6th of June, at 10 am, in the Auditorium of the Algarve Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR Algarve), in Faro.

The study, promoted by Almargem – Association for the Defense of the Cultural and Environmental Heritage of the Algarve, outlines an exhaustive diagnosis of three wetlands in the region, namely Foz do Almargem and Trafal, in Loulé, Lagoa dos Salgados and Foz de Alcantarilha, in Albufeira and Silves, and Alagoas Brancas, in Lagoa.

Almargem stresses that «the project was created with the purpose of filling the gaps in scientific and socio-economic knowledge of the wetlands of Foz do Almargem and Trafal and of Alagoas Brancas and of compiling and deepening existing information, in the case of Lagoa dos Salgados».

The result presents a socioeconomic, geomorphological and hydrological characterization of these areas, as well as the identification of existing flora communities, as well as avifauna, arthropods, reptiles and amphibians, highlighting their importance in the environmental context, but also pointing out suggestions for proposed strategies management for its preservation.

Aiming at analysis by public and private entities, whether at local, regional or national level, these studies "assume a high importance for the attribution of a protection status to the areas in question", adds the environmental association.

The study, resulting from an approved application to the Environmental Fund of the Ministry of Environment and Energy Transition, was coordinated by Associação Almargem with the support of the scientific coordination of the Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds – SPEA, and had a technical team formed by independent experts , as well as entities such as the Center for Marine and Environmental Research of the University of Algarve, Tagis – Center for the Conservation of Butterflies of Portugal and cE3c – Center for Ecology, Evolution & Environmental Changes of the University of Lisbon.

The session will be open to all interested parties and will have the active presence of representatives of the entities responsible for the study, the Institute for Nature and Forest Conservation (ICNF) and the municipalities of Albufeira, Lagoa, Loulé and Silves.

The studies have already been made available in full on the Almargem website for consultation, just click here to access.
