Portimão is the European City of Sport

Around four thousand gymnasts of all ages and from the four corners of Portugal will participate, from the 28th to the 30th of June, in the National Gymnastics Festival, in Portimão.

This large-scale sporting and social party starts on the 28th with the parade of participants through the streets of the city, scheduled for 21 pm, starting at the Clube Naval, ending with a concentration at the old auction, where athletes and athletes will be welcomed and their families and gifts will be given to each club represented.

Throughout these very busy days, the event will feature several high points, with emphasis on PortugalGym, the Battle of Champions, the Professor Henrique Reis Pinto Gala and the “Odus” show, which will feature the involvement of gymnasts of high technical level , but also with hundreds of informal practitioners.

As far as PortugalGym is concerned, it is a non-competitive event that involves participants of all ages in the GpT – Gymnastics for All discipline, in which clubs register freely to present their work/schemes prepared throughout the year.

Stakeholders will have the opportunity to hold public demonstrations in emblematic areas of the city, such as Praça 1º de Maio, Alameda da República and next to the old fish market, located on the riverside of Portimão.

The performances take place simultaneously and will take place on Saturday, June 29 (from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm and from 17:00 pm to 19:30 pm) and on Sunday, June 30 (from 9:30 am to 12:00 pm). On both days there will also be presentations at the Pavilhão Gimnodesportivo de Portimão, between 9:30 am and 12:00 pm.

As for the Battle of Champions, scheduled for June 29 at Portimão Arena, it will take place from 14:00 to 16:00 and will include the following competitive disciplines: acrobatics, aerobics, rhythmic, artistic, team gym, trampoline, tumbling and double mini-trampoline, with the participation of elite gymnasts. In each discipline there will be a “duel” between two gymnasts, who will be evaluated by two judges and by the public. Tickets cost 5 euros.

That night, from 21 pm, Portimão Arena will receive the Professor Henrique Reis Pinto Gala, which honors a leading figure in national sport, in which the 30 classes that received the “gold” mention at the Gym for Life in Portugal participate.

The classes will be evaluated by a previously designated jury, being in dispute the mention “diamond”, to be attributed at the end of this performance. The presentations are interspersed with acrobatics, aerobics, rhythmic gymnastics, artistic gymnastics, teamgym, trampoline, tumbling and double mini-trampoline exercises. Tickets for this show also cost 5 euros.

Finally, from 16:00 pm to 17:30 pm on the 30th, the “Odus” show takes place in the same municipal facility, which only takes place in 2019 because it is the year of the World Gymnaroad, scheduled for the Austrian city of Dornbirn, between 7th and 13th of July. More than 20 thousand participants are expected, representing 65 countries, under the aegis of the International Gymnastics Federation. Portugal is one of the eight countries with the privilege of exhibiting its own show, called “Odus”, and in Portimão, the only public presentation will be made in the national territory, with 970 participants from the 1100 that will integrate the Portuguese delegation. Those interested in attending must purchase the respective ticket, in the amount of 5 euros.

Overall, the National Gymnastics Festival 2019 will bring to Portimão, the European City of Sport, a total of 3930 participants representing 78 clubs from north to south of the country, accompanied by their coaches and many family members.
