New GNR commander wants to maintain a climate of "peace and tranquility" in the Algarve [with photos]

New commander considers it essential to reinforce road inspection and prevention actions

Maintaining the «security and well-being» of the population of the Algarve is the main priority of Pedro Oliveira, the new commander of the Territorial Command of Faro of the GNR, which took office this Friday, May 10, replacing Joaquim Crasto.

At the inauguration ceremony, that the Sul Informação followed, Lieutenant Colonel Pedro Oliveira was satisfied with an "important milestone in his career" and guaranteed that "strengthen the proximity of society, rationalize resources, modernize and dematerialize processes and procedures, cooperate and collaborate with other institutions and bodies" , four guidelines that are part of the Guard 2020 strategic directive, «will be my permanent reference», in the Territorial Command of Faro.

The new head of GNR in the Algarve also guaranteed that he intends to «promote proximity and community policing» and «take an even more active role in defending the forest against fires».

In this context, Pedro Oliveira considers that the «commitment to prevention is essential» and promises «the Guard's commitment to monitoring and raising awareness of the population, in collaboration with local authorities, for land clearing and creation of fuel management lanes, which are essential for the prevention of fires. In addition to facilitating access to resources, they allow for mitigating situations that it was not possible to prevent».

The commander also defined as objectives "optimizing and qualifying the operational response, in the context of criminal investigation and the protection of nature and the environment."

In addition, it highlights the need to “strengthen prevention and inspection actions in the road network is fundamental”.

Making the Algarve a safe destination for tourists is also one of Pedro Oliveira's goals, because, according to him, «the attraction factors of the Algarve, as a result of the economic climate, stability, natural resources and infrastructure, would be insufficient if they were not guided by the guarantee of safety'.

The ceremony was presided over by Botelho Miguel, general commander of the GNR, who highlighted the «personal attributes, human dimension and professional experience» of Pedro Oliveira, before emphasizing that there has been a «gradual decrease in crime registered in the last five years in the region. , which makes the population live in a climate of peace and tranquility”, a situation that “we are determined to preserve”.

The responsable, as he had done on the GNR Unity Day, recalled the work of the military in the Monchique fire last year, taking the opportunity to thank the results obtained during the command of Joaquim Crasto.

The former commander, who will retire, for his part, highlighted the “new cycle that has begun in the life of the unit, whose protagonist is Pedro Oliveira”.

Regarding the time he spent in charge of the command, Joaquim Crasto emphasizes that «there were many tests and many successes» obtained, thanks to «support from local authorities, institutions and the population». Something that “has to be continued by everyone”, he asked.

Pedro Oliveira was born in the parish of Vila Cova, in the municipality of Seia, and was born on June 18, 1969. In 1996, he joined the permanent staff of the Guarda Nacional Republicana, with a master's degree in Law and Security, from the Faculty of Law of Universidade Nova from Lisbon and a degree in Military Sciences from the Academia Militar.

The new territorial commander of Faro he was GNR liaison officer in the Ministry of Internal Administration, Chief of Staff of the GNR Intervention Unit and commander of the Public Order Intervention Group of the GNR Intervention Unit. He was also company commander in the operation Babylonian Antique, in Iraq, and Commander of the UNTAET Operational Platoon, in East Timor.
