Six Automatic External Defibrillation (AED) equipment for community use will be placed in strategic locations in the three parishes of the municipality of Portimão, as well as another four AED devices will be assigned to the pickets of the security forces, PSP, GNR and the National Maritime Authority.
The DAE will be placed in Praia da Rocha, Alvor and Portimão riverside areas, Alameda da República, Praça 1º Maio and Mexilhoeira Grande, in order to cover the main areas of the municipality.
Last Wednesday, April 10th, the training of security forces operatives began, with a first action involving the GNR military and PSP agents. In total, more than 200 elements of these three security forces will be trained.
The training of employees of the Parish Councils of Portimão, Alvor and Mexilhoeira Grande will follow, and of volunteers in the areas of influence of the DAE that will be installed on public roads, thus allowing the full operation of these facilities, whose function is save lives by anticipating this ability in victims of cardiorespiratory arrest.
This is an investment by the Municipality of Portimão, which already amounts to 28.000 euros, and through which it is intended to invert the data known at national level: in Portugal, more than 10.000 cases of sudden cardiac death occur every year. . In case of cardiopulmonary arrest (CPA), all the time counts, but in 57% of recorded cardiorespiratory arrests, no resuscitation maneuvers are performed. On the other hand, there is only one DAE for every 10.000 inhabitants, so only 3% of people who suffer a CA outside the hospital environment survive.
Since 2016, the Municipal Civil Protection Service of Portimão has implemented its own Automatic External Defibrillation (AED) program, ensuring autonomy to its technicians and volunteers in its use, and currently guaranteeing the presence of a defibrillator in all relevant events promoted in the county.
Through this partnership, established since then, with the Firefighters of Portimão, as a training entity accredited by INEM, the number of people able to autonomously use a DAE device in the municipality has already surpassed 250 operational, including firefighters and technicians who perform functions in the areas of culture and sport in the municipality of Portimão.
