The 13th edition of the Youth Basketball Festival came to an end on Tuesday, with a closing ceremony and awards ceremony, which filled the Albufeira Sports Pavilion and was attended by the Secretary of State for Youth and Sports.
«This party is impressive. Here you can breathe the values of sport. I leave here with renewed energy and I feel sorry for not having come to this event longer ago», said Secretary of State João Paulo Rebelo.
The government official, together with the presidents of the Albufeira City Council, José Carlos Rolo, and the Portuguese Basketball Federation, Manuel Fernandes, handed over the trophies to the winning teams of the Albufeira Youth Basketball Festival 2019.
Madeira got the better of Lisbon (52-50) in the women's U16 category, in what was the first title of the selection in this event.
Aveiro won the men's U16 competition again, seven years later, thanks to a 58-45 triumph over Porto, thus preventing the opponent's four-time championship.
In a remake of last year's final, Lisbon and Algarve faced each other again for the men's U14 title, but now with a different outcome. The Alfacinha team won the south by 50-48.
Porto grabbed the “tri” in the women's U14 category after overcoming Madeira by 57-36.
In total, the Algarve teams have reached the podium twice: a 2nd place in Men's Under-14 and a 3rd place in Men's Under-19.
«It is extraordinary to watch this human frame, this family celebration that for six days gives Albufeira a new color and dynamic», highlighted José Carlos Rolo.
The mayor guaranteed that, for the year, Albufeira will continue to be the host city for this event and stressed that «the Party is as or more important than the competition because it highlights the values of friendship, conviviality, fair play and the spirit of team, so important for the healthy growth of these young people«.
From the 11th to the 16th of April, Albufeira hosted 18 groups of young people from all over the country, who were accompanied by coaches, referees, managers, national coaches, members of the organization, physiotherapists and family members. In total, the Youth Basketball Parties involved close to 5 people.
