Revenue from fish sales in 2018 was the highest in the decade

Vila Real de Santo António auction was in fifth place, nationally, in terms of sales value

The income of fishermen with fish sold at auction, in 2018, was «the highest in the decade», announced Docapesca.

The average price of fish sold at the company's 22 auctions and 37 stations increased by 0,9% in 2018, compared to the previous year, «going from 2,04 to 2,06 euros per kilo, the highest value since systematized statistical records exist'.

In all, nearly one hundred million tons of fish were sold at auction, a 4,2% growth compared to 2017, with the value of transactions reaching 205,5 million euros (+5,1%).

 

 

The auction in Vila Real de Santo António was in fifth place, nationally, in terms of sales value, with a total of 13 million euros. Above, only the auctions of Peniche (34 million euros), Matosinhos (26,9), Sesimbra (24,9), Aveiro (16,9).

The five main auctions in terms of quantity of fish traded were in Sesimbra (21.313 tons), Matosinhos (19.476), Peniche (11.894), Aveiro (8.778) and Sines (5.256).

"Among the species with the highest sales value, the ones that contributed the most to the overall increase at the national level were octopus and mackerel, only these being responsible for an increase of 10 million euros in sales", according to Docapesca.

 

 

In all, there were 149 species that recorded a drop in sales value, which, in these cases, fell by 12,9 million euros, from 2017 to 2018. On the other hand, there were 146 species with sales increases (another 23 million euros), «which provided the positive differential of 10 million euros».

With regard to the average price, three of the five main species at national level registered increases, especially octopus (+7,6%), sardines (+34,8%) and horse mackerel (+30,1%) .
