It is necessary to "always bear in mind that, under these conditions, the sea can easily reach apparently safe areas"

The forecast for the state of the sea predicts an exceptional worsening of the conditions of wind and sea agitation between today, 26 March, and dawn on Monday, on the southern coast of the Algarve, due to a strong "Rise" event, warned the National Maritime and Marine Authority.

The sea agitation will be characterized by swells coming from the southeast quadrant, with significant height, which may reach 4 meters and an average period varying between six and seven seconds. The wind may register speeds above 70 km/h and gusts above 100 km/h.

For this reason, the Maritime and Marine Authority recommend "strengthening the mooring and tight surveillance of moored and anchored vessels, as well as avoiding sidewalks along the sea, where the harbor protection breakwaters stand out."

They also advise that "seafarers maintain a state of permanent vigilance and monitor the evolution of the weather situation, navigational warnings and weather forecast broadcast by the Navy, relating to the IPMA weather forecast, as well as other information from the Captaincies on the conditions of access to ports'.

To the general population who frequent coastal areas, they advise that they "refrain from taking walks along the coastline, on the cliffs and beaches, as well as from recreational activities in areas exposed to maritime agitation, it is essential that they assume a posture preventive, not unnecessarily exposing oneself to risk'.

If there is an absolute need to travel to the coast, a “watchful attitude” must be maintained.

Maritime and Marine Authority “strongly” advise against recreational fishing, especially near the cliffs and cliff areas on the coastal fronts affected by the breaking waves. It is necessary to “always bear in mind that, under these conditions, the sea can easily reach apparently safe areas”.
