In a press release, the Câmara de Lagoa emphasizes that «today, more than ever, the fundamental role of women in society and respect for their dignity as a person is discussed. Women's civic participation in equal circumstances and rights is accompanied by the existence of stereotypes that refer to the conceptions of the role of women and men in society. The relationship of women and men with private life is the backbone of these stereotypes».

“Remarkable progress in promoting awareness of gender equality in public terms has fueled the fundamental proposals for the definition of the Sustainable Development Goals, with the design of the 2030 Agenda, in which goal 5 refers to guidelines aimed at achieving equality and empower all women and girls”, adds the municipality.

It is in this context that the Municipality of Lagoa proposes, for the 8th of March, the commemorations of the International Women's Day, «continuing an already recognized and awarded investment in the areas of gender equality and citizenship».

In 2019, the United Nations once again calls for “the International Women's Day to be an opportunity for all women to raise their voices and claim their rights”.

Therefore, concludes the Câmara de Lagoa, «on this day we pay homage to the great woman who was Maria Barroso, an Algarvean, Portuguese and European woman, who distinguished herself in her time by her intense civic, democratic and cultural participation, determined in the defense of the values that he understood that they were fundamental».
