Portimão paid homage to the "sportsman of choice" Filipe Santos

Also honored at the same ceremony were Paulo Sousa, coach Filipe Santos, and João Nascimento, chairman of the O2 Portimão club

Portimonense swimmer "of choice" Filipe Santos received today the Medal of Honor European City of Sport 2019 (CED), following the World, European and national record achieved in the 25-metre SM21-SDown class moth event, which was part of the Adapted Swimming National Winter Championship.

Portimão City Council decided to reward the athlete, following the achievement of «another important triumph for his record, which includes dozens of world, European and national titles, having beaten a world maximum with more than 10 years».

“Filipe is a top sportsman, in addition to being an extraordinary human being, whom we must cherish and encourage, so that he continues to have good results. It is in our heart and is already part of the collective history of local sport, since it takes the name of the municipality far away», considered the mayor of Portimão Isilda Gomes, during today's ceremony.

The O2 Portimão club, which the Porto record holder aligns with, was also represented at the ceremony, namely by João Nascimento, chairman of the board, and Paulo Sousa, coach Filipe Santos, who were also honored.

The coach, who has been training Filipe Santos since 2005, revealed that the next challenge will be the European Long Swimming Championship, taking place from 12 to 22 September on the Italian island of Sardinia, in which the swimmer will participate in the 50 meters moth and 50 meters back.

«During the month of August we will train in the long pool in Loulé, so that the athlete can get used to this distance. For a performance at the highest level, it requires good physical preparation, a lot of concentration and the fine-tuning of one or another technical detail, requiring strict management, which only depends on Filipe, to bring us more joy», revealed Paulo Sousa.
