Silves Municipality is in solidarity with former Alicoop workers

Autarchy demands that "justice in all this undignified process be definitively restored"

The Municipality of Silves expressed today, in a statement, its «total solidarity with the workers of the former Alicoop», who, once again, are being «confronted with the credits they were forced to contract with Banco Português de Negócios SA ( BPN), at the beginning of 2008, in order to “save” the company and under penalty of losing their jobs».

The autarchy stresses that “there are many dozens of workers affected, in several cases, involving more than one element of the household, in a “creative” and unqualified process that does not dignify its authors and those responsible for it”.

Alicoop and later N&F – Comércio e Distribuição Alimentar SA (Grupo Nogueira), «accepted themselves responsible for the payment of the credits, a guarantee that was enshrined in the Insolvency Plan of the latter entity, which ran at the Judicial Court of Silves, and was approved in 13 March 2012», recalls the Chamber.

With the "Agreement on the fulfillment of benefits approved under the Insolvency Plan", signed between the company N&F (Grupo Nogueira) and Banco BIC, heir of BPN, and with the subsequent claim of credits by the Bank with the company N&F , "the workers rightly considered the matter closed".

Therefore, underlines the Municipality of Silves in its communiqué, "the attitude of Banco BIC to proceed with execution processes to workers, relating to the same credits that it was claiming from the N&F company, is a huge surprise and indignity".

The Municipality of Silves concludes by announcing that it is fighting for «the Bank of Portugal, the Attorney General's Office and the Government to eliminate the real threats that hang over large dozens of workers, causing instability in their family life, definitively restoring justice throughout this undignified process'.
