Created in 1994, with the purpose of the “a sul” International Contemporary Dance Festival, and made official in 1996, it was born from the need to develop cultural projects that would contribute to overcome the discreet and insufficient cultural activity in the Algarve, particularly in the area of performing arts .
Although it had the dance area as its starting point, this structure embraces a whole series of cultural and artistic areas, inherent to the assumption of its contemporary aspect.
It has, since 1997, the recognition and support of the Ministry of Culture/Directorate-General for the Arts, through its support programs and is funded by the Municipality of Faro and a wide range of municipalities from across the region for the projects it develops, contributing to the cultural dynamism of the same in the scope of dissemination, production, dissemination and training in the areas of the performing arts.
CAPa, Algarve Performing Arts Center (2001), a transdisciplinary structure based in the center of Faro, whose core activity is the Creation Residency Program, which consists of supporting independent, national and international creators, through the provision of work spaces and technical and logistical support for the development of their creations, preferably emerging proposals that bet on experimentation and in the crossing of languages.
In parallel, this Center develops a set of complementary activities to the Residency in Creation Program, aimed at creating/training audiences: Shows Programming Seasons, training cycles, network programming at regional and national level and other projects aimed at community, as is the case of the Festival “DeVIR meetings” (1st edition 2012 – 5th edition 2019) and the project “DeVIR meetings – junior” (2014-15) .
«CAPa is a house for many, where they temporarily live in an artificial way, in absolute dedication to every creation that develops here».
