Sun Concept builds an "eco-naval shipyard" in Olhão

The brand's new factory will produce more energy than it consumes and use recycled materials. The goal is to be an "example of industrial sustainability" in the country

Sun Concept, a shipbuilding company specializing in the development and manufacture of electro-solar vessels, is going to build, in Olhão, an “eco-shipyard, fully integrated into the environment to build its solar vessels”.

«This is a completely environmentally sustainable factory, which aims to meet the concept of protecting the planet that constitutes the brand image of Sun Concept», emphasize the managers of the award-winning Algarve company.

Sun Concept's new facilities, to be built in Olhão, will be completely autonomous from an energy point of view, producing energy equal to or greater than that which will be consumed in the new shipyard.

"The new installations will be sustainable, not only from an energy point of view, but also in terms of the use of water and air conditioning, among others, and everything will be studied, so that it can be an example of industrial sustainability", he explains Manuel Costa Braz, CEO of Sun Concept.

Offices with "garden" coverage to allow constant temperatures to be achieved, outdoor car parking areas covered by solar panels, with the dual function of providing shade and producing energy, and most of the huge covered surface of the used industrial facility to install solar panels, are an example of this.

«We want to do justice to the Sun Concept concept and, more than a brand, be a reference in terms of responsible entrepreneurship and eco-sustainable industry», points out Costa Braz.

The central area of the nave will have large translucent areas, which will allow maximum use of sunlight, so that artificial lighting is used as little as possible inside.

Air movement zones will also be created, so that the air inside the premises is always of superior quality.

The internal greenhouses will be powered by the heat created by the panels themselves, through heat pumps that work with the green electricity produced, or by the production of hot water for heating these greenhouses, central heating of the installations and sanitary water.

“A wastewater use will also be created to water the roof of the facilities and the green areas that we will create outside to soften the views and the surrounding climate”, adds the CEO of Sun Concept.

The outdoor lighting lamps of the enclosure will be powered at night by the energy accumulated during the day and it is intended to cover the exterior pavement with recycled materials.

“We will do everything so that Sun Concept is an example of innovation and environmental concern, not only in relation to the products it designs and builds, but also in relation to the way it produces them. Much more than building superior quality sustainable boats, Sun Concept wants to establish itself as an example of sustainable entrepreneurship. And customers, when purchasing and operating with vessels manufactured by us, will naturally be integrated into the concept and objectives that drive us. The use of our boats is the concrete and unequivocal proof that it is possible to do better!”, defends Costa Braz.
