Eat well and live healthily this Christmas, warn Intervention Cardiologists

“Practice physical exercise, controlling your diet and avoiding stress are good ways to prevent coronary heart disease!, says president of APIC

A Portuguese Association of Cardiovascular Intervention (APIC) will promote an awareness-raising initiative for the prevention of coronary heart disease with the motto “This Christmas give your heart a gift”. The goal is to raise awareness of the importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle.

“The arrival of the Christmas season is a good pretext to encourage people to make some changes in their lifestyle, opting for healthier choices that allow them to reinforce heart care. Practicing physical exercise, controlling your diet and avoiding stress are good ways to prevent coronary heart disease”, explains João Brum Silveira, president of APIC.

Coronary heart disease is characterized by the accumulation of fatty deposits inside the arteries that supply blood to the heart. These deposits cause the arteries to narrow or block which causes a decrease in the levels of oxygen and nutrients reaching the heart muscle cells. The main coronary diseases are angina pectoris and acute myocardial infarction.

“Hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, obesity and sedentary lifestyle significantly increase the risk of suffering from coronary heart disease. Prevention is the best way to avoid the comorbidities and mortality associated with these diseases”, concludes João Brum Silveira.

A Portuguese Association of Cardiovascular Intervention (APIC), a non-profit entity, aims to study, research and promote scientific activities within the scope of medical, surgical, technological and organizational aspects of Cardiovascular Intervention.
