ECOS Project and Pinheiro e Rosa Schools Group wins Erasmus+ Good Practices Award

Project lasted two and a half years

The project “Network of Democratic Citizenship Schools”, coordinated by the cooperative ECOS, in partnership with the Agrupamento de Escolas de Pinheiro e Rosa, from Faro, won the Erasmus + Escolar Escolar Good Practices Award, which was awarded on the 15th of November, in Cascais.

Lasting two years and with the support of the European ERASMUS+ programme, the “Network of Democratic Citizenship Schools” project had the participation of schools and civil society organizations from Slovenia and Poland.

The main objective was «the promotion of active citizenship for young people, as well as for the entire school community», explains the Pinheiro e Rosa School Group.

The Reference Scale tool for Participatory Citizenship Schools resulted from the collaborative work of 38 students, teachers, civil society professionals and education specialists and is presented in the form of a participation test, which can be carried out in any school or grouping of schools that want to know the level of participation of students, parents, teachers and other professionals in the various dimensions of school life.

At a time when the education system in Portugal seeks to embed citizenship in the school culture itself, namely through the approval of the Education Strategy for Citizenship in September 2017, this tool can be assumed as a solution for schools and groups that are responsible “for monitoring and evaluating its Education Strategy for Citizenship, defining the methodology to be applied and the impact indicators, namely on school culture, school governance, and the relationship with the community”.

The tool divides the school universe into four dimensions and takes into account the four main school actors. Invites the community to rate each actor's level of participation in each of the four dimensions and summarize them to find the school's level of participation.

This project had already been highlighted by the European Platform for School Education, School Education Gateway, in an article translated into 24 languages.

The Gonçalo da Silveira Foundation's “Alternatives – Local Experiences” project for a global transformation also includes this initiative in its mapping of Local Change Initiatives that aim to promote social change with a view to building a more solidary, fair, inclusive and sustainable society .
