Change of GNR Territorial Command to Loulé catches Faro by surprise

Mayor revealed intention to build a GNR post in Montenegro

It was with a «very fast phone call» from Eduardo Cabrita, Minister of Internal Administration, that, «a few months ago», Rogério Bacalhau, president of the Chamber of Faro, was notified of the transfer of the GNR Territorial Command to Loulé. The situation caught him “by surprise” and the mayor liked to “know more information” on the subject. 

According to the mayor, in that call, Eduardo Cabrita also informed him that "another command in the metropolitan area of ​​Lisbon" was going to be transferred. The minister himself had already guaranteed, upon signing the contract that will allow the transfer of the Territorial Command to Loulé, who had warned Rogério Bacalhau about the matter.

"We were later to speak, but I was taken by surprise," Rogério Bacalhau told reporters, on the sidelines of the meeting of the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities, held this Tuesday, November 13, in Faro.

According to Rogério Bacalhau, the GNR post and the detachment "will continue" in Faro. Asked whether the transfer of Territorial Command to Loulé represents a loss of importance for Faro in the Algarve panorama, the mayor devalued the issue.

«I don't think the importance of Faro Go there. It is important to have state services here, but if the importance of Faro if you measure it like that, then we are in a bad way», considered Rogério Bacalhau.

Still related to security matters, this Monday, 12th of November, the PS/Faro he publicly asked for the construction of a PSP squadron in Montenegro.

In this regard, the President of the Chamber of Faro revealed that "there have been talks" between the GNR commander, Steven Piedade, president of the Parish Council of Montenegro, and Isabel Oneto, Deputy Secretary of State and Internal Administration, so that "we can install a GNR post in Montenegro" and not of the PSP.

“I think that, in terms of security, what matters in that area is to ensure better conditions. Whether it's GNR or PSP, it's something the forces have to study and see which is the best solution. At the moment, the area belongs to the jurisdiction of the GNR», concluded Rogério Bacalhau.
