Michelin stars «exercise strong power of attraction» of tourists to the Algarve

«Algarve gastronomy is a heritage of excellence»

the Algarve has eight Michelin-starred restaurants, something that exerts «a strong power to attract tourists to the region», considers João Fernandes, president of the Algarve Tourism Region (RTA).

«Algarve's gastronomy is a heritage of excellence, with high quality products for the greatest chefs world cuisine that use them masterfully to achieve international recognition, such as the Michelin Guide. I congratulate all those who have been distinguished again, extolling our gastronomy», says João Fernandes.

The product Gastronomia & Vinhos «is strategic for RTA as an element of valuing the destination's offer. The regional tourism entity has thus been developing several actions to enhance the product in the region, such as the “Algarve Cooking Vacations” project, which, by 2020, wants to create culinary and oenological vacation programs to attract the more than one million people who travel with the motivation to live this type of experiences», explains the Tourism Region, in a statement.

The Algarve continues to be the Portuguese region with the highest number of stars and restaurants in the Michelin Guide, maintaining ten stars and eight restaurants in the most prestigious world gastronomic guide. The revelation was made at the gala for the presentation of the “Guide Michelin Spain and Portugal 2019”, which took place this Wednesday, for the first time, in Lisbon.

The region continues to have two two-star restaurants: the Ocean, at Vila Vita Parc, in Lagoa, by chef Hans Neuner, and the restaurant in Vila Joya, in Albufeira, by chef Dieter Koschina, who has been represented for 26 consecutive years at the Michelin Guide, a record in Portugal.

Recently, Austrian chef Dieter Koschina revealed that the secret of this longevity is in the Algarve itself, a paradise with sun and high-quality seafood.

Added to these are six restaurants that maintain a Michelin star: Bon Bon (Carvoeiro), Willie's (Vilamoura), Vista, from the Bela Vista Hotel (Praia da Rocha, Portimão) and Henrique Leis, São Gabriel and Gusto (all three in Almancil).
