Algarviana Ultra Trail crosses the region's «most genuine»

This will be the second edition of the race

A Algarvian Ultra Trail race (ALUT) it starts on 29 November and will travel, until 2 December, the Via Algarviana, from Alcoutim to Sagres.

This is a proof that will once again show «the most genuine of the Algarve. An Algarve of beaches and mountains, fishing and hunting, modernity and tradition. An Algarve that cannot be explained, you can feel it», according to the organization.

And it is with the keenest senses that the athletes are challenged to run the ALUT trails over 300 kilometers in a 72-hour time limit.

«There are more than 300 kilometers that separate Alcoutim, and the banks of the River Guadiana, from Sagres, next to the Farol of Cabo de São Vicente, wave ends the land and begins the sea».

«After the first edition of ALUT, many of those who participated and their families were amazed and pleased to have known an Algarve that is far from the beaches, which remains authentic, genuine and with a great cultural and landscape wealth», says Bruno Rodrigues, from the organization of the event.

Participation is limited to 100 participants, since, as stated by Germano Magalhães, also from the ALUT organization, this «is a competition for athletes for athletes».

«As organizers, we like to reflect on ALUT our best experiences as athletes. We like athletes to be known and treated by name and not by dorsal number. From the beginning, we defined that 100 would be the limit of our abilities to know and treat each athlete individually, with all the dedication and attention. All athletes have our phones, in the months before ALUT we talked several times, supported and answered all doubts. On race days, this attention and dedication extends to all support teams, family and friends. Furthermore, ALUT is not a race, it is a journey. An interior journey, through the interior. None of this is compatible with a mass event», he says.

ALUT is a pedestrian recreational/sports event in nature, taking place almost entirely on the Via Algarviana.

This second edition is organized by the ATR –Algarve Trail Running Association, with the support of the Algarve Tourism Region, ANA –Aeroportos de Portugal and the Almargem Association.

In its first edition, in 2017, the race had around 60 athletes, who covered the 300 kilometers of the course, with approximately 7000 meters of accumulated positive slope, on the ground and in relays of two, three and four elements.

The winner of this first edition it was João Oliveira, Chaves Run Team ultramarathon runner – Associação Desportiva Dragões de Chaves, which needed only 43 hours to complete the route, which had 72 hours of time limit foreseen for its conclusion.
