Four Algarve projects won Participatory Budget Portugal

Citizens chose among 691 projects that have, in total, 5 million euros from the State Budget to invest

The creation of an Algarve Literary Route, the free distribution to municipalities of a nest box for different types of birds, the implementation of the “Costas para o Futuro” project and the promotion of the Ermida de Santo António do Alto, in Faro. These were the four Algarve projects that won the Participatory Budget Portugal (OPP), whose results were just known this Thursday, 11 October.

Starting with the creation of the Algarve Literary Route, this project, valued at 120 thousand euros, aims to enhance the Algarve's heritage, establishing connections between the physical space and the texts of Algarve authors.

For this, the idea is to create literary itineraries in the 16 municipalities of the region, making them available in Portuguese, English and French, in order to expand, diversify and enrich the offer of cultural experiences in the Algarve. This is an initiative, proposed by Rita Baleiro and Sílvia Quinteiro, to be implemented in 24 months.

As for the “Local Housing for Birds” project, authored by Fábia Azevedo, coordinator of the RIAS – Center for the Recovery and Research of Wild Animals, in Olhão, provides for «the free distribution of nest boxes for different types of birds to interested municipalities and schools of the Algarve region”, as well as the carrying out of environmental education actions.

The objectives of this proposal are «to boost the interest and more direct contact of the local population in relation to avifauna, increase the availability of shelter for the target species of this proposal and raise awareness of the importance of birds in the well-being of urban ecosystems in the Algarve », it reads.

In order to arouse the population's curiosity, and also with the aim of obtaining more information to be worked on from a pedagogical point of view, the installation of surveillance cameras in some nest boxes to be occupied will also be considered. The images obtained would be broadcast live on an online platform, available to any citizen interested in observing the daily life of the species. The project, to be implemented in two years, is valued at 150 thousand euros.

Moving on to the dynamization of the Ermida de Santo António do Alto, the project aims to rehabilitate and open to the public the Church, the viewpoint and the Antonino museum, which was once open to visit.

«The area surrounding the Ermida is an area of great interest to the population of Faro and the realization of this project will enrich the cultural, historical, artistic and leisure heritage. Once reclassified, this space will also become a must-see tourist attraction for those visiting the city of Faro», is read in the project by Ana Sena Morgado and Samanta Duarte, valued at 70 thousand euros and whose implementation deadline points to 24 months (two years).

Finally, the fourth Algarve Participative Budget winner in Portugal was the “Costas para o Futuro” project, which provides training for physiotherapists in the area of education and prevention of postural health in children.

This project has as general objective the teaching and practice of correct postures in order to prevent the early onset of back pain in children and the reduction of its incidence in adulthood. The idea, by Sílvia Conde, is to cover schools in the 16 municipalities of the Algarve.

According to the Participatory Budget Portugal, this second edition received «more than 1400 ideas for Portugal, which came to us through the OPP website or which were submitted in the 37 participatory meetings that we held across the country».

Citizens chose among 691 projects, national and regional, how to invest 5 million euros from the State Budget and almost 120 thousand votes were registered, which resulted in 22 winning projects.
