Olhão breathed poetry over 10 days

«Music was heard, theater was seen, poems were recited and Olhão was placed at the center of the artistic world»

There were 10 days in which Olhão, with the inspiration by the poet João Lúcio, he breathed literature. “Poesia a Sul” ended this Sunday, October 28th, but it is already an event “on an international level”

The poet João Lúcio, whose death centenary the Municipality is marking in October, was a transversal theme throughout this year's edition of Poesia a Sul.

The colloquium in homage to the poet from Olhão, last Saturday, October 27th, brought together appreciators and scholars of his work and life, on a day that also evoked Saramago and Cape Verdean poetry. All with the Ria Formosa in the background.

«The IV International Poetry in the South Meeting, organized by the Municipality of Olhão, brought poets from almost two dozen countries to the council. There were moments of sharing experiences and cultural exchange, music was heard, theater was seen, poems were declaimed and Olhão was placed at the center of the artistic world», says the City Council.

João Lúcio, one of the figures of Portuguese modernism who deprived him of Fernando Pessoa, had to talk in various events, which culminated in the colloquium that took place at the Associação Cultural Re-Criativa República 14.

António Cândido Franco, Jacinto Palma Dias, Fernando Cabrita, Vasco Prudêncio and Vítor Cantinho spoke about the works of the poet from Olhão and the unusual characteristics of his house, Chalet João Lúcio, in Quinta de Marim.

According to the local authority, «Poesia a Sul is one of the great poetry events at the international level, or if it didn't count with the presence of poets from the four corners of the world».

So it is not surprising that "many municipal spaces" hosted "this meeting, curated by Fernando Cabrita, who also visited the parishes, municipalities of Castro Marim, Lagos and Vila do Bispo and was also in neighboring Spain."

«This event, organized and logistically and financially supported by the Municipality, with the important support of 365Algarve, is gaining its place on the national and international scene, taking the name of Olhão and Portuguese literature to different countries and specialized audiences and circles» , refers, in turn, António Pina, mayor of Olhão.
