Environmental Impact Study of the Olhão to EN125 Bypass was delivered

IP will have to wait, now, for the eventual favorable Environmental Impact Statement, to be able to carry out the execution project and proceed with the work

The Environmental Impact Study for the construction of the Olhão bypass to the EN125 was delivered by Infraestruturas de Portugal to the Portuguese Environment Agency at the beginning of the week, announced the public company.

In July, the minister of Planning and Infrastructure Pedro Marques had already assured that the work on the Olhão bypass was not forgotten. At the time, the member of the Government stated that “the preliminary study that is necessary to obtain the Environmental Impact Statement (DIA) is almost completed. I think it will be now in August that it is finished».

"This means that we will be able to obtain the DIA for this structuring work, according to our expectations, in early 2019. At that time, we can do the execution project and then the work", added the minister.

The route now proposed was "consensual between IP and the municipality and represents a solution that will ensure a strong improvement in the mobility and cohesion of the urban fabric, aiming to overcome the environmental issues observed by the Portuguese Environment Agency in previous studies carried out by the sub-concessionaire RAL" , according to Infrastructures of Portugal.

The work, budgeted at 5 million euros, «is one of the interventions defined by IP as a priority to be carried out on the EN125, which will be carried out along the section between Olhão and Vila Real de Santo António, with a view to improving fluidity conditions. and safety of road and pedestrian circulation, providing the EN125 with a high level of quality service, consistent with a tourism region of excellence such as the Algarve today».

The project, whose Environmental Impact Study was delivered, foresees the construction of a road of about six kilometers, with one lane in each direction, “which will take advantage of several existing municipal sections. Along this route, seven roundabouts will be built in conjunction with the local road network, thus ensuring the improvement of urban mobility and accessibility to the Port of Olhão, facilitating the movement of passengers and goods», added IP.

For now, the company has not yet put forward an estimate of when the work may start.
